Expression Engine move on hold

So far, Expression Engine has impressed me…it is a seriously good CMS and does some things really well.

I have also discovered (sadly) that the things I want to do with it, for this site, are beyond the abilities of the ‘Core’ (free) version that I’ve been practising on! In other words: in order to do what I want to do with it, I would have to be using the ‘all singing, all dancing’ paid-for ‘Commercial’ version.

It is worth the money (over twice my annual hosting bill for the initial purchase though!)…but not for something I’m still learning, and, not for something that is about to have a totally new version (2.0) launched sometime this Summer! …I can wait for that as it does look very, very good indeed! ;)

So, in the meantime, I’ll be staying put with Textpattern for the site CMS, and this means I am turning my attention back to the long-overdue redesign as well (and more regular content updates!)

Before doing anything else on a redesign though, it makes sense to bring my own install of Textpattern up to date…so, last night, I backed-up everything (twice!) and did a LIVE upgrade from version 4.0.4. to version 4.0.6. (the latest release).

It went seamlessly and only took about 30 minutes to do – I am slightly impressed with that.

Now, back to that redesign…. ;)

Hey there. Fellow Textpattern user here. I’m trying out Expression Engine too experimentally. I think it may be useful to get a couple of CMSes under my belt for the sake of keeping other options open.

But I admit to being a true TXP fan. It’s almost miraculous how a seeming obstacle can actually be overcome with a little patience, research, ingenuity and some life-saving plug-ins.

I just made the move from WordPress to ExpressionEngine for my personal site. I am using the pay version, but now that I’m done, I realize I could’ve done without the license – I’m not using any of the commercial-only modules.

So I have to ask: what is it that you want to do but can’t with the Core install?

I’m totally with you about the imminent 2.0 release worries. I partially decided to make the plunge now because I’m starting to use EE with my employer for my day job, and being able to know what clients can migrate and which can’t (or shouldn’t) is a plus for me. But if it was just me, I’d have been likely to hold off.

Cheers for the comments guys!

Gary: You’re quite right about the patience and research part for a TXP solution! :)

Matt: Congratulations for making the move from WP to EE. In regards to your question, there are certain plans I have for this site (and others, as yet un-developed) which require security and group/forum-like features that are unfortunately absent from the Core version of EE. Also, there’s nothing in the Core version of EE that I can’t already do in TXP. Combined with the potential (albeit delayed) launch of EE 2.0 will make me wait a bit longer until I buy a licence and make the move.

It is not so much a case of ‘if’ I will buy the full version of EE as ‘when’ – there is a strong chance it is likely to happen at some point though.
